Why Hyper-V Backup Software

Why Hyper-V Backup Software?

Hyper-V is Microsoft's hypervisor for Windows Server and Windows 10/11, but protecting it requires more than just running it. Checkpoints are not backups; they reside on the same host as the VM, fail during host issues, and don't guard against ransomware or data corruption.

A solid backup strategy involves moving VM data off the host to versioned cloud storage, ensuring encryption and a reliable restore process. MSP360 Backup provides the automated, encrypted, incremental backup that IT teams and MSPs need, featuring a standalone agent for smaller setups and a centralized web console for managing multiple clients.

Key Features

Hyper-V VM Backup

Back up all VMs, running VMs only, or a specific selection. Choose between backing up the current checkpoint or all existing checkpoints. Supports Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2019, Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, Windows 11 Pro.

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Backup

Full support for Hyper-V Failover Clusters with Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage. Install the agent on a Hyper-V host that is part of the local Failover Cluster - it handles VM discovery and backup automatically.

Changed Block Tracking (RCT-based)

Incremental backups that only transfer what changed. CBT tracks modified disk blocks between runs, dramatically reducing backup windows and storage costs. Supported on Windows Server 2016+ and Windows 10+.

Application-Consistent Backups

Hyper-V production checkpoints help ensure applications (SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory) are quiesced at backup time. Configure per-VM behavior: try app-consistent, require it, or skip. Ensures application-consistent recovery for VSS-aware workloads.

Flexible Schedule, Retention & Synthetic Full

Choose Simple (Forever Forward Incremental) or Advanced (GFS + Object Lock) schedules. Simple schedule uses synthetic full backup to create new full backups within cloud storage without re-uploading all data. Set retention down to the restore point level: daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. Missed backups run on the next startup.
Managed

Centralized Management

Create and deploy Hyper-V backup plans from the MSP360 web console - no need to touch individual machines. Monitor status, receive alerts on failure, and manage all clients from one dashboard.

Encryption

TLS-protected data transfer and AES-128/192/256 encryption for stored backup data. Encryption is configured per backup plan — choose key size based on your security requirements.

Immutability & Storage

Combine with Object Lock/GFS retention for immutable backups that ransomware can't touch. Store on AWS S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, Azure, or any S3-compatible destination.

MSP360 Backup for Hyper-V FAQ

Can MSP360 back up a Hyper-V Failover Cluster?

Yes. MSP360 supports Hyper-V Failover Cluster backup with Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage. You only need to install one agent on a cluster host - it discovers all clustered VMs automatically.

What license do I need for Hyper-V backup?

VM backup requires the VM Edition license. In Backup Pro this is the 'VMware / Hyper-V' SKU ($279.99/year) - one license covers both hypervisors. For Managed Backup, VM Edition is licensed per host; use the pricing calculator for exact costs.

What's the difference between checkpoints and a real backup?

Hyper-V checkpoints (standard or production) are stored on the same host as the VM. If the host fails, you lose both the VM and its checkpoints. MSP360 moves backup data to a separate cloud destination - temporary backup checkpoints created during the process are removed after completion.

Does MSP360 support application-consistent Hyper-V backups?

Yes. MSP360 uses production checkpoints (VSS-based) to create application-consistent snapshots. This ensures databases like SQL Server, Exchange, and SharePoint are in a recoverable state at backup time. You can configure per-VM behavior: try, require, or disable app processing.

Can I restore a Hyper-V VM to the cloud?

Yes - MSP360 supports restore to Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure VM. This enables cloud-based disaster recovery: if your on-prem host is unavailable, you can spin up the VM in the cloud from the backup.

How does Changed Block Tracking work?

On each incremental backup run, MSP360 creates a new checkpoint and compares it against the previous run's change-tracking data. Only the modified blocks are transferred. This significantly reduces backup time and cloud storage costs for VMs with stable data.

What's the difference between Backup Pro and Managed Backup for Hyper-V?

Both offer the same Hyper-V backup capabilities including Failover Cluster support, CBT, and application-consistent backups. Backup Pro is configured locally on each host via the agent UI. Managed Backup adds a web console where you can create, deploy, and monitor backup plans across all hosts and clients remotely - essential for MSPs managing multiple environments.
