Hypervisor-Level Proxmox Backup

Hypervisor-Level Proxmox Backup

Recovering a failed Proxmox environment without a backup requires manually recreating VM configurations and reinstalling guest OSs. MSP360 Backup for Proxmox simplifies this by capturing complete VM snapshots at the hypervisor level, eliminating the need for an agent on each VM or LXC. The agent installs on any Windows machine and connects to the Proxmox host via API, with no configuration needed on the Proxmox server.

MSP360 Proxmox Backup Features

MSP360 Backup for Proxmox provides core hypervisor-level backup capabilities for Proxmox VE. Backup virtual machines with encryption, compression, and flexible scheduling.

Hypervisor-level VM backups

Backup Proxmox VE virtual machines directly at the hypervisor level without installing agents inside each guest OS. MSP360 Backup connects to the Proxmox host via the Proxmox API and captures complete VM disk images, including all attached virtual disks.

Incremental backups

The first backup run always creates a full backup. All subsequent runs are incremental, capturing only the blocks that have changed since the last job. This keeps backup windows short and storage usage low.

Synthetic full backups

Starting with version 8.6.5, MSP360 Backup for Proxmox supports synthetic full backups, provided the selected storage account supports this feature. A synthetic full backup is assembled from the most recent full backup and all subsequent incremental jobs — without running a new full backup job on the source data.

Simple Schedule (Forever Forward Incremental)

Also available from version 8.6.5, Simple Schedule keeps a rolling chain of incremental backups and automatically manages retention, so you always have a usable restore point without manual scheduling complexity.

Scheduled full backups

In addition to incremental schedules, you can configure scheduled full backup runs independently - useful for compliance requirements or long-term retention strategies.

Backup data encryption

Protect backup data with password-based encryption. Specify an encryption password when creating a backup plan, and all backup data is encrypted before being sent to the storage destination.

Bring-your-own cloud storage

MSP360 Backup for Proxmox supports a wide range of backup storage destinations: Amazon S3 and S3-compatible storage, Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Storage, and local storage (drives, NAS, network shares).

Flexible VM selection

Choose exactly what to backup from your Proxmox environment: all existing virtual machines, all currently running virtual machines, or a specific selection of virtual machines.

Planned: Granular disk selection is planned for a future release. Currently, all disks attached to a VM are included in the backup.

Full VM restore

Restore a complete virtual machine to any specified Proxmox server. Choose to power on the VM automatically, overwrite an existing VM, or create a new VM with a custom name.

Item-level restore

Recover individual files or folders from any backup restore point without restoring the entire virtual machine. Browse the backed-up volume structure, select the files you need, and restore them to a specified location.

MSP360 Backup for Proxmox FAQ

Where do I install MSP360 Backup for Proxmox?

The agent is installed on any supported Windows machine. No software installation or configuration is required on the Proxmox host itself. All backup settings are configured using the MSP360 Backup Plan interface - the same workflow used for VMware backups.

Do I need Proxmox Backup Server?

No. MSP360 Backup for Proxmox does not require Proxmox Backup Server and does not use it in any way. Backups are stored directly to your chosen storage destination.

Is there anything I need to configure on the Windows machine?

Yes. Inbound traffic on port 8007 must be allowed on the Windows machine running the agent. If it is blocked when a backup plan runs for the first time, the plan will fail with error code 1962. You will be prompted to allow the traffic — click the corresponding link in the Backup Agent GUI to resolve it.

Are backups incremental?

Yes. The first backup run always creates a full backup. All subsequent runs are incremental. Starting with version 8.6.5, synthetic full backups and Simple Schedule (Forever Forward Incremental) are also supported, provided the selected storage account supports these features.

Where can I store my Proxmox backup?

MSP360 Backup for Proxmox supports the following destinations: Amazon S3 and S3-compatible storage, Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Storage, and local storage (drives, NAS, network shares).

What can I restore?

You can restore a full virtual machine to any specified Proxmox server — with options to power on automatically, overwrite an existing VM, or create a new VM with a custom name. Item-level restore is also supported: recover individual files or folders from any restore point without restoring the entire machine.

What is MSP360 Backup for Proxmox Community Edition?

MSP360 Backup for Proxmox Community Edition is a free standalone backup tool for Proxmox VE environments. It provides hypervisor-level VM backup with encryption, compression, incremental backups, and flexible restore options - at no cost, with no time limits. It currently supports 1 Proxmox host with up to 2 sockets.
