Windows Server 2012 Core Edition saves computing resources of the machine by cutting down such features as a graphical user interface and inessential services. Nevertheless, user data still needs to be kept safe. In this post, we will find out how to install and configure MSP360 Backup on Windows Server Core.
MSP360 Backup has a built-in command line interface (CLI), which is the only possible way to use the software with Windows Core. CLI is included in all MSP360 Backup (CBB) editions, but you can use only Server and Ultimate with Windows Core.
CBB doesn’t need more resources than Windows Server Core:
- 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
- 512 MB RAM
- 100 MB minimum disk space
- Gigabit (10/100/1000baseT) Ethernet adapter
There are also software requirements for backup facilities. Make sure you have got:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable x64.
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.
Installation and configuration
Now, when we meet all the requirements, it’s time to install MSP360 software for Windows Server backup.
- Switch the current directory to the path where your CBB distributive is located. For example:
cd /d “C:\CloudBerry\install folder”
- Run the installation file by the following command:
Note: x.x.x.x stands for the CBB version you use, /S — for silent installation mode. In a few minutes the software will be installed to C:\Program Files\CloudBerryLab\CloudBerry Backup.
- From this moment we will work with MSP360 Backup command interface — cbb.exe. Let’s switch to the CBB folder:
cd /d “C:\Program Files\CloudBerryLab\CloudBerry Backup”
- We recommend you to activate CBB before going into action. Choose the trial version first for a 15-day test without restrictions:
cbb.exe activate license -e "your_email_adress" -edition "ultimate" -t
Note: If you use Server edition, run -edition “server” instead.
After that you will get the confirmation as it is shown below:
- The last step of the initial configuration is defining the storage for backup. For the demonstration we will use Amazon S3. To embed it, use the following command:
cbb.exe addAccount -d "myStorage" -st "AmazonS3" -ac "Your Access Key" -sk "YourSecretKey" -c "YourBucketName"
The displayed name for the new storage account will be “myStorage”. After specifying credentials you get the following message:
You can also set up the bandwidth speed by this command:
сbb.exe -o -bw xxx
Note: xxx stands for the speed in kilobits.
Now CBB is fully configured.
How to backup
CBB on Windows Server Core supports almost all backup features supported by the common version. For example, you may back up any file or directory by a simple command:
cbb.exe backup -a myStorage -f "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Image.bmp" -d "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Data" -ifm "*.rtf;*.bmp"
By running this command you perform a one-time backup of image.bmp in Administrator\Documents and save all .rtf and .bmp files from the \Data folder to myStorage account. The backup process will be tracked in the Command Line.
You may also schedule your data maintenance by creating a backup plan. Run the following command:
cbb.exe addBackupPlan –n "MyBackup" -a myStorage -f "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Image.bmp" -d "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Data" -ifm "*.rtf;*.bmp" -every week -weekday "su" -at "12:00"
By doing this you create a backup plan called “MyBackup”, which automatically saves files from the specified folders to MyStorage account on Sundays.
To get your data from the latest backup, run the following command:
cbb.exe restore -a "myStorage" -d "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents -rl original -rt latest -o
Note: you may restore data with CBB even without getting a license.
After that all files assigned to the Documents folder will be restored to their original location overwriting the existing files with the same names.
Recovery may be more flexible. You can restore files to a different folder and choose the exact version of them. To do this, run next:
cbb.exe restore -a "myStorage" -d "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents -rl "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Restored” -rt 05.10.2016 -o
The preserved data from Documents dated May 10th, 2016 will be restored to the Documents\Restored folder.
