VM Backup That Fits Your Virtual Infrastructure

Virtual machines are crucial in modern IT, but hypervisors often lack adequate protection. Snapshots are local and not designed for disaster recovery. A robust VM backup strategy should involve moving data to encrypted cloud storage with independent retention and a reliable restore process.

MSP360 supports Hyper-V, VMware vSphere, and Proxmox VE, offering tailored backup solutions like incremental backups, encryption, and centralized management for MSPs. Proxmox Community Edition is free and unlimited.

Built Into Every VM Backup Plan

Hypervisor-Level VM Backup

Back up virtual machines directly at the hypervisor level - no agent required inside each guest OS. MSP360 connects via the native hypervisor API and captures complete VM disk images including all attached virtual disks. Choose to back up all VMs, running VMs only, or a specific selection.

Incremental Backups with Block-Level Tracking

The first run creates a full backup. All subsequent runs transfer only the blocks that changed since the last job - using RCT (Hyper-V), CBT (VMware), or Proxmox API change tracking. Keeps backup windows short and storage overhead low without re-uploading unchanged data.

Synthetic Full Backup

Assemble a new full backup from the most recent full and all subsequent incrementals - without running a new full backup job against the source. No impact on the production host during assembly. Available for Hyper-V, VMware, and Proxmox (v8.6.5+).

Application-Consistent Backups

Ensure VSS-aware workloads are quiesced before snapshot creation. Hyper-V uses production checkpoints; VMware uses VMware Tools. Supports SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, and Active Directory. Configurable per VM: try, require, or disable. VMware falls back to crash-consistent if quiescing fails.

Instant Restore

Instant Restore enables virtual machines to boot directly from backup storage without waiting for a full restore operation to complete. Supported for Hyper-V and Proxmox VMs.

GFS Retention

Grandfather-Father-Son retention automatically maintains daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly restore points - no manual scheduling required for long-term recovery coverage. Combine with Object Lock for immutable archival chains.

Object Lock Immutability

Store backup data in a locked state that cannot be modified or deleted - even by an admin - for a defined retention period. Works with Object Lock-compatible storage including AWS S3 and Wasabi. Protects backup chains from ransomware and accidental deletion. Combine with GFS for compliance-ready long-term retention.

Hybrid Backup

Automatically replicate your backup to one or multiple secondary destinations for offsite redundancy and disaster recovery.

Bring-Your-Own Cloud Storage

No vendor lock-in - connect to the storage provider you already use. Supported destinations include Amazon S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and IDrive e2, plus any S3-compatible provider. Local storage and NAS also supported.

Client-Side Deduplication

Eliminate redundant data before it reaches cloud storage - reducing upload size, bandwidth usage, and storage costs without affecting recovery granularity. Block-level deduplication runs on the client before transfer and is especially effective in VM environments with many identical blocks across machines. Available in the new backup format (NBF) for Hyper-V and VMware.

FAQ for VM Backup

Which hypervisors does MSP360 support for VM backup?

MSP360 supports Hyper-V (Windows Server and Windows 10/11), VMware vSphere ESXi (6.0 through 8.0), and Proxmox VE. Proxmox backup is currently in public beta.

Is there a free option for VM backup?

Yes - MSP360 Backup for Proxmox Community Edition is free with no time limits. It covers one Proxmox host with up to 2 CPU sockets and includes hypervisor-level VM backup, incremental backups, automatic compression, and bring-your-own cloud storage. For Hyper-V and VMware, a free trial is available.

Do I need a different license for each hypervisor?

No. In Backup Pro, one "VMware/Hyper-V" license covers both Hyper-V and VMware. Proxmox Community Edition is free. For Managed Backup, VM Edition is licensed per host - see the pricing calculator for costs.

What's the difference between MSP360 Backup Pro and MSP360 Managed Backup?

Both offer the same hypervisor-level backup capabilities. Backup Pro is managed locally via the agent UI on each host - suited for smaller environments. Managed Backup adds a centralized web console for deploying and monitoring backup plans across all clients and hypervisors.

Can I manage Hyper-V, VMware, and Proxmox from the same console?

Yes - MSP360 Managed Backup supports all three hypervisors from a single web console. Each environment uses its own backup plan, but all are visible and manageable from the same dashboard.

Can I restore a VM in the cloud?

Hyper-V and VMware backups support direct restore to Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure VM. Proxmox supports full VM restore to any Proxmox server and item-level file restore. Restore to EC2/Azure is not currently available for Proxmox.

Are VM backups encrypted?

Yes. Hyper-V and VMware backups use AES encryption (128/192/256-bit) configured per backup plan. Proxmox backup uses password-based encryption - all backup data is encrypted before being sent to the storage destination.

What is MSP360 Backup VM Edition?

MSP360 Backup VM Edition is essential for backing up virtual machines at the host level. Unlike standard licenses, VM Edition enables hypervisor-level backups. In Backup Pro, it's referred to as "VMware/Hyper-V" and costs $279.99/year, covering both hypervisors. For VMware hosts with over 2 physical processors, additional socket licenses are $139.99/year each. In Managed Backup, VM Edition is licensed per host. Check the pricing calculator for precise costs.
