MSP360 Backup 5.6 packs a number of improvements and novelties. Yet the pre-eminent feature of the latest iteration of our flagship backup product is the hybrid backup<\/a>. It conflates the best from the two worlds of backup: cloud and local. Read on to learn more about the highly-requested and long-awaited feature.

Introduction<\/h2>\n

Following the best practice in the backup industry unquestionably demands\u00a0some sort of conflation of local and cloud backup. With that in mind, many of our users opt to configure\u00a0at least two different\u00a0backup plans<\/a>\u2014one for local and the other\u00a0for cloud backup. This approach is not particularly efficient in that it puts extra workload on the utilized computer. First, the files are uploaded from the computer to the local storage\u2014let's say a local NAS\u2014and then the same process repeats to upload the files from the computer to the cloud storage.\u00a0A more reasonable approach here would be to first transfer the files to the NAS and then upload them from the NAS to the cloud. That would give some relief to the main computer, requiring fewer disk operations. This\u00a0is what Hybrid Backup\u00a0in MSP360 Backup 5.6 essentially is. Let's talk more about that.<\/p>\n

Hybrid Backup<\/h2>\n

The hybrid backup now combines those aforementioned two backup plans into one which naturally\u00a0makes it easier to do the setup process. Further, encryption and compression are only performed once during the initial backup to the local storage. The already encrypted and compressed files are then uploaded to the cloud storage. Compare that to double encryption and compression with the old way!<\/p>\n

Single backup plan, less workload\u00a0on the main computer, single encryption and compression, and simplified configuration make for a\u00a0much better backup experience.<\/p>\n

Setup<\/h2>\n

The Backup Wizard in MSP360 Backup 5.6 immediately asks you if you want to configure a hybrid or merely a local or cloud backup. Select Hybrid Backup and click Next.

Now select the required local storage.

Proceed to specify cloud storage.

The remaining steps\u00a0have not changed. Conclude configuring the plan and execute it upon finishing.<\/p>\n

Prior to using Hybrid Backup, bear in mind its limitations:<\/p>\n

  1. Filename encryption is not supported for hybrid backups;<\/li>\n
  2. Hybrid backup reduces the number of available retention policy settings. Namely, deleting files that have been deleted locally is unavailable for hybrid backups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
